Coinbase

Coinbase is a U.S. digital asset and financial services company serving individuals, institutions, businesses, and developers. Its parent company, Coinbase Global, Inc., trades on Nasdaq under the ticker COIN. The platform combines crypto trading and custody with stablecoin payments, derivatives, and onchain products, while offering stocks and prediction markets to eligible customers.

History and Background

Coinbase was founded in 2012 by co-founder Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam, initially focusing on access to Bitcoin. Coinbase Global became the holding company for Coinbase, Inc. and other operating subsidiaries. It went public through a Nasdaq direct listing on April 14, 2021, and joined the S&P 500 on May 19, 2025.

The business has since expanded beyond retail brokerage into institutional execution, custody, derivatives, and blockchain infrastructure. Coinbase acquired derivatives exchange Deribit in August 2025. On October 1, 2026, it consolidated the infrastructure powering Coinbase International Exchange perpetuals onto Deribit by Coinbase.

Core Products and Services

• Consumer trading and Coinbase Advanced: The consumer app offers crypto purchases, sales, recurring buys, and eligible staking services. Advanced provides order books, charts, advanced order types, and APIs. It replaced Coinbase Pro. Coinbase's Advanced website lists 405 spot assets and more than 500 spot pairs as of November 2026; availability varies by region.
• Derivatives and options: Coinbase offers futures and perpetual products through different regulated entities. Deribit provides crypto options, futures, and perpetuals. Access depends on jurisdiction and customer eligibility; Coinbase's October 2026 integration notice describes additional U.S. options access as forthcoming.
• Prime and custody: Coinbase Prime combines institutional execution, financing, custody, and onchain access. Coinbase Custody Trust Company operates under a New York limited-purpose trust charter.
• Business and payments: Coinbase Business provides crypto operating accounts, stablecoin payments, payouts, and fiat offramps for eligible businesses. Coinbase Commerce was consolidated into Business; the transition deadline for legacy Commerce merchants was March 31, 2026.
• Subscriptions and additional markets: Coinbase One offers membership benefits subject to plan limits and regional availability. Eligible customers can also access stocks, ETFs, and prediction markets through the relevant Coinbase products.

Base and Developer Infrastructure

Coinbase incubated the Base Ethereum layer 2 network, which supports onchain trading, payments, and applications. Originally built on the OP Stack, Base introduced its own Base Stack foundation through the Azul upgrade in 2026. Coinbase Wallet, previously branded Base App, is a separate self-custodial product. Coinbase Developer Platform supplies wallet, trading, and payment infrastructure for developers and businesses.

Fees, Availability, and Support

Advanced uses maker and taker fees that depend on the product and account tier, with qualification based on applicable trading-volume or balance requirements. Simple trades may include a spread and transaction fees. Customers should check their account's current fee schedule and order preview rather than assume a single company-wide rate.

Payment methods and withdrawal timing vary by country, bank, and account status. U.S. ACH transfers generally take one to five business days, while eligible instant cash-out methods are available. Identity verification is required for exchange services. Product-specific eligibility and sanctions restrictions apply; a restriction on Coinbase Card or a particular token does not necessarily apply to every Coinbase service. Support is available through Coinbase's Help Center, with chat and phone options depending on region and issue.

Team and Governance

Brian Armstrong is co-founder and CEO, Emilie Choi is president and chief operating officer, and Alesia Haas is chief financial officer. The executive team also includes Dominique Baillet, chief people officer; Rob Witoff, chief technology officer; Molly Abraham, general counsel and corporate secretary; Liz Martin, VP of markets; Max Branzburg, VP of product; and Jesse Pollak, VP of engineering. Coinbase reports financial results as a public company and operates through subsidiaries with different licenses and regulatory permissions.

Risks and Considerations

Centralized custody creates operational and counterparty exposure, while leveraged derivatives can produce substantial losses. Coinbase remains sensitive to crypto prices, trading activity, interest rates, competition, and regulatory changes. The SEC dismissed its civil enforcement case in February 2025, stating that the decision was not an assessment of the merits of its claims.

In May 2025, Coinbase disclosed customer-data theft involving bribed overseas support agents. The company said passwords and private keys were not exposed, but the stolen information facilitated social-engineering fraud. Coinbase committed to reimbursing affected customers. The incident illustrates risks from third-party access, impersonation, and misuse of customer information.
