X (formerly Twitter) is an American social media company based in San Francisco, California, that was founded by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in March 2006 and was launched July of the same year. Twitter was acquired by X Corp, whose company’s owner is billionaire Elon Musk.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk finalized the acquisition of Twitter at his original bid price of $54.20 per share, for a total cost of approximately $44 billion on October 2022. The rebranding of X from twitter is another step in Twitter’s continuous evolution from an online hangout for hyper-connected individuals to an app that can handle “everything,” according to newly appointed CEO Linda Yaccarino.
