Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and attorney serving as the 49th Vice President of the United States. Born in Oakland, California, she is the daughter of Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher from India, and Donald Harris, an economist from Jamaica. Harris attended Howard University, where she earned a BA in Political Science and Economics. She then obtained her JD from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Career

Harris began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office before serving as the District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011. In 2011, she was elected Attorney General of California, a position she held until 2017. During her tenure, she focused on issues such as criminal justice reform, consumer protection, and the foreclosure crisis.

In 2017, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate representing California. As a senator, she served on several committees, including the Judiciary Committee, where she gained national attention for her rigorous questioning during confirmation hearings.

Vice Presidency

In 2020, Harris was elected Vice President of the United States, making history as the first female, first African American, and first Asian American Vice President. In this role, she has focused on addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, immigration reform, and climate change.
