About BNB

BNB is the native asset of the BNB Chain ecosystem and was formerly known as Binance Coin. It is used to pay transaction fees, participate in BNB Chain governance, stake with validators, and access Binance ecosystem benefits such as trading-fee discounts, token airdrops, and VIP features.

BNB Chain is built around three main networks: BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, and BNB Greenfield. BNB Smart Chain is the main EVM-compatible Layer 1 network, opBNB is a Layer 2 scaling network for BNB Smart Chain, and BNB Greenfield is the ecosystem's decentralized storage network.

BNB is unusual because it sits between two categories. It is both an exchange-linked utility asset and the gas token for a major smart-contract network. That means BNB's market behavior depends on Binance ecosystem demand, BNB Chain activity, validator economics, token burns, DeFi usage, stablecoin liquidity, and broader crypto market conditions.

For price-focused users, the most important signals are BNB Chain transaction activity, DeFi total value locked, stablecoin supply, DEX volume, active addresses, validator participation, exchange access, and the pace of BNB burns. For longer-term research, the key question is whether BNB Chain can keep supporting high-volume EVM activity while managing validator concentration, regulatory exposure, and legacy bridge risk.

BNB was created in June 2017, launched through an ICO in July 2017, and initially issued as an ERC-20 token. BNB's original supply was 200 million, and burns are expected to continue until supply reaches 100 million.

BNB transitioned from Ethereum to BNB Chain after the April 18, 2019 mainnet launch, and “Build and Build” is the current philosophy behind BNB.

How BNB Works

BNB Smart Chain uses Proof of Staked Authority, or PoSA. BNB Smart Chain has an active validator set of 45 validators, made up of 21 Cabinet validators and 24 Candidates, with validators selected through staking.

BNB is the gas token for BNB Smart Chain. Users spend BNB to transfer assets, deploy contracts, interact with decentralized applications, and pay transaction fees. Validators and delegators receive staking rewards from transaction fees rather than from native token inflation.

BNB holders can stake by delegating tokens to validators. The validator set is determined by the amount of BNB staked by validators and delegators, and rewards are shared through validator contracts. Validators can also be penalized through slashing if they misbehave or go offline.

opBNB adds a Layer 2 scaling path for BNB Smart Chain. opBNB uses the Optimism OP Stack, with transactions processed away from the base chain and data posted back to BNB Smart Chain.

Tokenomics, Supply, and Burns

BNB launched with an initial supply of 200 million tokens. Its supply model is based on reducing that supply toward 100 million BNB through burns, rather than issuing new BNB through mining.

As of Apr. 15, 2026 at 11:55 am UTC, the 35th quarterly burn removed 1,569,307.34 BNB, worth about $1.02 billion at completion, leaving 134,786,916.53 BNB in remaining total supply at the time of writing. These figures should be refreshed after each new quarterly burn.

BurnsQuarterly Auto-Burn plus BEP-95 real-time gas-fee burns
MiningNot mineable
Staking RewardsFunded by transaction fees on BNB Smart Chain

BNB has two burn mechanisms. The quarterly Auto-Burn reduces supply based on a formula tied to BNB price and BNB Smart Chain block production, while BEP-95 burns a fixed ratio of gas fees collected by validators in each block.

This burn model is central to BNB's tokenomics. It reduces supply over time, but the market impact still depends on demand for BNB, transaction-fee activity, Binance ecosystem utility, exchange access, and broader crypto liquidity.

Network, Protocol, and Ecosystem Context

BNB is used to pay for activity across BNB Chain, secure BNB Smart Chain through staking, and support applications built across DeFi, payments, gaming, NFTs, trading, and data storage. BNB is the asset that powers and coordinates BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, and BNB Greenfield.

On Apr. 28, 2026, BSC DeFi total value locked was $5.488 billion, with $13.89 billion in stablecoin market cap, $569.62 million in 24-hour DEX volume, $293.87 million in 24-hour perps volume, 3.49 million 24-hour active addresses, and 15.16 million 24-hour transactions. These are live ecosystem indicators and should be treated as a dated snapshot.

Supply MechanicsAuto-Burn, BEP-95 gas-fee burns, total supply, and burn cadence
Exchange UtilityBinance fee discounts, airdrop access, VIP features, and exchange liquidity
Legacy RiskBNB Beacon Chain shutdown, token recovery, and historical bridge exposure

BNB Beacon Chain is now a legacy reference point. BNB Chain Fusion migrated Beacon Chain functions to BNB Smart Chain, and Beacon Chain has been shut down since block height 385,251,927 on Dec. 3, 2024.

Risks and What to Watch

BNB's biggest asset-specific risks are validator concentration, Binance-linked regulatory exposure, bridge history, smart-contract risk, and reliance on continued BNB Chain and Binance ecosystem demand.

BNB Smart Chain's 45-validator PoSA model helps support fast blocks and low fees, but it also makes validator selection, stake distribution, governance, and infrastructure concentration important areas to monitor. The validator set is stake-ranked and elected through staking-based governance.

BNB also carries legacy bridge risk. In October 2022, the BSC Token Hub bridge between BNB Beacon Chain and BNB Smart Chain was exploited, with 2 million BNB withdrawn before the response contained most of the funds. That incident remains important context even after BNB Chain Fusion retired Beacon Chain.

BNB's exchange-linked utility is another factor. Binance-related benefits can support demand, but they also connect BNB to exchange access, policy changes, regional restrictions, and regulatory developments affecting Binance services.

Application-level risk is separate from base-chain risk. DeFi protocols, wallets, bridges, tokens, NFTs, and trading apps on BNB Chain can carry smart-contract, liquidity, oracle, custody, and user-interface risks even when BNB Smart Chain itself is operating normally.

BNB Price Prediction and Market Outlook

BNB price prediction depends on Binance ecosystem demand, BNB Chain usage, token burn cadence, validator economics, DeFi activity, stablecoin liquidity, exchange access, and broader market appetite for Layer 1 assets.

The strongest BNB-specific signals are not just live price and market cap. Watch BNB Chain fees, active addresses, transactions, DEX volume, total value locked, stablecoin supply, burn disclosures, validator participation, and regulatory headlines tied to Binance-linked products.

BNB FAQs

BNB FAQ

What is BNB?

BNB is the native asset of the BNB Chain ecosystem. It is used for gas fees, staking, governance, validator rewards, DeFi activity, payments, and Binance ecosystem benefits. BNB was formerly known as Binance Coin and is now associated with the “Build and Build” identity.

How does BNB work?

BNB works as the gas and staking asset for BNB Smart Chain. The network uses Proof of Staked Authority, with validators selected through staking. BNB also powers activity across opBNB and BNB Greenfield, which extend the ecosystem into Layer 2 scaling and decentralized storage.

What is BNB used for?

BNB is used to pay transaction fees, stake with validators, support governance, access BNB Chain applications, and participate in Binance ecosystem benefits such as fee discounts, airdrops, and VIP features. Its demand depends on both on-chain activity and exchange-linked utility.

Is BNB still Binance Coin?

BNB was originally called Binance Coin, but BNB Chain now frames BNB around “Build and Build.” The older name still matters for search and market history, but the asset’s current role extends beyond exchange discounts into BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, and BNB Greenfield.

Does BNB have a max supply?

BNB launched with an initial supply of 200 million tokens. Its supply is being reduced through burns toward a long-term target of 100 million BNB. Current supply figures change after burn events, so the live supply fields on this page should be treated as the current reference.

How does the BNB burn work?

BNB uses quarterly Auto-Burn events and [BEP-95 real-time gas-fee burns](https://github.com/bnb-chain/BEPs/blob/master/BEP95.md). Auto-Burn reduces supply toward the 100 million BNB target, while BEP-95 burns a fixed ratio of gas fees collected by validators in each block. The latest burn data should be refreshed after each quarterly update.

Is BNB mineable?

No. BNB is not mined like proof-of-work assets such as Bitcoin. BNB Smart Chain uses Proof of Staked Authority, and validator rewards come from transaction fees rather than new native-token inflation or mining rewards.

Is BNB a good investment?

CryptoSlate does not provide investment advice. BNB may interest users because of its exchange utility, burn model, and BNB Chain ecosystem activity, but it also carries validator concentration, regulatory, smart-contract, bridge-history, and market volatility risks.

Which networks support BNB?

BNB is native to the BNB Chain ecosystem, including BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, and BNB Greenfield. Wrapped or bridged versions may exist elsewhere, but users should always match the correct asset and network before depositing or withdrawing. Unsupported transfers can result in loss.
