Charles Schwab Review: Fees, Cash, Crypto, Safety And Who It Suits

Verified Review
Published Updated

Thinkorswim, futures, direct foreign markets and nearly every spot crypto ETF share one login at Schwab, and no other broker in this Charles Schwab review's comparison set matches that toolbox. The cost is in the cash, which earns almost nothing and is moved out of FDIC bank sweep when an investor turns on options or crypto. Options and active traders get the most from Schwab, and investors who leave cash uninvested pay for it.

Is Charles Schwab Worth It?

Commissions match other large US brokers, so Schwab's main cost shows up in cash. The brokerage sweep pays 0.01% APY, against 2.42% to 3.80% in Schwab's own money funds, which an investor has to buy.

Investors who want stocks, options, futures and foreign shares at one firm fit Schwab best. Its standout product is thinkorswim, paired with a $0.65 options fee.

Idle cash is the main drawback, since every brokerage sweep pays 0.01% APY. Investors who hold large cash balances or want more coins with on-chain transfers should compare alternatives.

Schwab makes sense when thinkorswim and futures belong under one login, and not when uninvested cash has to earn a market rate without a fund purchase.

Who Charles Schwab Suits And Who Should Skip It

Cash habits and crypto needs decide how well Schwab fits.

Buy-And-Hold ETF InvestorGood fit. Fractional ETF shares from $1, but cash waiting between buys earns 0.01%
Retirement Saver (IRA)Good fit. Every IRA type and an Individual 401(k) at $0, but no spot crypto
Options TraderGood fit. $0.65 per contract on thinkorswim. Approval takes cash out of FDIC bank sweep
Active / Day TraderGood fit. 24/5 trading and one-cancels-other brackets. Pattern day trader status takes cash out of FDIC bank sweep
Investor Holding A Lot Of CashPoor fit. Cash earns 0.01% unless moved into a fund or Treasuries
Crypto BuyerMixed fit. Two coins at 0.75% per trade, transfers not open to all, not offered in NY or LA
Crypto ETF InvestorGood fit. 58 of the 62 open spot crypto ETFs are listed, with no extra agreement to buy
Beginner With A Small AccountGood fit. $0 minimum and 24/7 support, though Android apps rate poorly

Schwab fits worst for investors who leave cash uninvested or need their coins to leave Schwab.

ETF investors buying on a schedule must place each order by hand. Switching brokers forces a sale of fractional positions, and in 2026 FINRA fined Schwab for failing to report about 2.2 million of those sales to its trade-reporting system.

Crypto At Charles Schwab: Spot Crypto And Crypto ETFs

Crypto ETFs trade in the brokerage account at Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. (CS&Co), and spot coins are held at a separate bank.

Schwab Crypto: Coins, Fees And Who Holds Them

Schwab Crypto is a bank product, offered by Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB (CSPB), a Texas state savings bank. Paxos Trust Company, N.A., a national trust bank supervised by the OCC, holds the coins for the bank as sub-custodian and executes trades. Schwab Crypto went live for a first group of clients in May 2026 and is opening in phases, with other investors on an early-access list.

Bitcoin and Ether trade today, with Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink announced. There is no spot XRP. Two live coins make a short list next to US crypto exchanges, including the platforms in our Coinbase exchange review and Kraken exchange review.

The fee is 0.75% of trade value with a $0.01 minimum. Liquidity providers picked by Paxos set the execution price. Trades are recorded only in the bank's own books, with no blockchain record.

Money comes in only from a linked Schwab One account, Schwab's standard brokerage account. Neither its dollars nor its coins earn interest, and it offers none of the crypto staking options that pay rewards elsewhere. Only some accounts can send coins on-chain.

Coins cannot be held in a Schwab IRA, and Schwab Crypto is not offered in New York, Louisiana or US territories. Linking it changes where brokerage cash is held.

Crypto ETFs At Schwab: Bitcoin, Ether, Solana And XRP

Schwab lists 58 of the 62 open US spot crypto ETFs, including all 13 spot Bitcoin ETFs. A 63rd fund, the Hashdex Bitcoin ETF (DEFI), closed in August 2026.

XRP5 of 5No spot XRP in Schwab Crypto
Other altcoins20 of 22LTCN and OBNB trade over the counter (OTCQX), so the $6.95 OTC commission applies

Schwab asks for no suitability agreement on crypto ETFs, the extra risk form some brokers require before a first purchase, and bans none outright. Every ETF quote page carries the line “An exchange process fee applies to sell transactions.” Schwab does not publish which crypto ETFs its order ticket accepts or whether they can be held in an IRA.

Costs: What You Actually Pay At Charles Schwab

Schwab charges nothing for online US stock and ETF trades, like its large rivals, so its fees come from options, margin, transfers out and charges on sells.

Stocks / ETFs (online)$0 on US exchange-listed, $6.95 OTC
Broker-Assisted Trade$25, or $5 by automated phone
Options$0.65 per contract, $0 on exercise and assignment
Mutual Funds (non-NTF)Up to $74.95 per buy, $0 per sell
Account Maintenance$0
IRA Fees$0 to open and maintain

Outgoing Wire$25, or $15 online
Spot Crypto0.75% of trade value, $0.01 minimum
Crypto WithdrawalWhere transfers are enabled: no transfer fee, network fee only

For a buy-and-hold investor, the likeliest cost is cash drag on uninvested money. The $50 full-transfer fee applies only on leaving.

What This Table Does Not Include

Funds charge their own expense ratios, outside the broker's fees. That includes Schwab ETFs and Schwab Funds, issued by Schwab Asset Management.

Schwab Options Fees

Options cost $0.65 per contract online, or $25 plus $0.65 through a broker. Exercise, assignment and online buy-to-close trades at $0.05 or less are free. Proprietary index options carry a fee Schwab passes through. Approval runs in levels, and Schwab shows the level definitions only inside the application.

Schwab Margin Rates

The base rate is 10.25%, and each tier adds a spread. Borrowing needs a $2,000 minimum.

Uninvested Cash: What It Earns And Who Holds It

Schwab pays 0.01% APY on uninvested brokerage cash, whichever sweep feature holds it. Schwab does not say which feature a new taxable account starts in. It sets bank sweep and Schwab One Interest at the same rate, so the difference is protection.

IRAs can use bank sweep or Schwab One Interest only, with no stated default. The Money Fund Sweep is limited to certain managed programs and employer retirement plans, so higher yield in any self-directed account means buying a fund.

Bank sweep (FDIC, multi-bank)0.01% APY
Schwab One Interest (broker-held)0.01% APY
Schwab Bank Investor Checking0.01% APY
Schwab Bank Investor Savings0.15% APY, FDIC
Schwab money funds, by purchase2.42% to 3.80% 7-day yields
Schwab CD OneSource, by purchase4.16% to 4.75% APY
Intelligent Portfolios sweep3.29% APY, robo accounts only

$10,000 left in the sweep for a year at 0.01% earns about $1 ($10,000 × 0.0001). The same $10,000 in a Schwab money fund at its 2.42% to 3.80% 7-day yields earns about $242 to $380, but only if the investor places the purchase.

Bank Sweep And Schwab One Interest: What Moves Your Cash

Bank sweep places cash at Schwab-affiliated banks and TD Bank program banks under FDIC insurance, while Schwab One Interest keeps it at the broker-dealer as an IOU from the broker. Schwab moves an account from bank sweep to Schwab One Interest, after at least 30 days' written notice, when it is:

  • designated a pattern day trader
  • using portfolio margin
  • approved for options trading
  • pledged against a line of credit at a Schwab bank
  • linked to a Schwab Crypto account
  • linked to a Schwab Bank Investor Checking account

The rate stays at 0.01%, but the protection changes because Schwab One Interest is not a bank deposit and is not FDIC-insured. SIPC covers it up to $250,000 in cash if Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. fails. Schwab's own disclosure says cash in a multi-bank sweep “is subject to a higher level of FDIC insurance protection” than cash under SIPC through Schwab One Interest.

Investor Checking clients were told in August 2026 that their cash moves between Sep. 8 and Dec. 7, 2026, unless they call to keep bank sweep. Schwab publishes no opt-out for options-approved or crypto-linked accounts.

Schwab's disclosure puts the monitoring burden on the client. “It is your responsibility to monitor your eligibility for the Cash Features and determine the best Cash Feature available to you.” The same disclosure says Schwab may set sweep eligibility partly to optimize its own financial benefit, and that it intends to use Schwab One Interest balances to fund margin loans.

Schwab Money Market Funds And Other Cash Options

Schwab has no high-yield savings account. Schwab Bank Investor Savings pays 0.15% APY, FDIC-insured to $250,000, and Investor Checking pays 0.01%. A market rate on cash means buying a Schwab money market fund, Treasuries or a CD.

Account Types And Retirement

Schwab opens every mainstream account type at $0 except an HSA.

Individual And Joint (Schwab One)Yes, $0 minimum, $0 fee
Traditional, Roth And Rollover IRAYes, $0 minimum, $0 fee
SEP And SIMPLE IRAYes, $0 minimum, $0 fee
Individual 401(k)Yes, $0 minimum, $0 fee
CustodialSchwab One Custodial and Custodial IRA, $0
TrustSchwab One Trust, $0
529Schwab 529 Plan (Kansas), with TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing as plan manager from March 2, 2026
HSANot offered. A Schwab Health Savings Brokerage Account can invest the balance of another provider's HSA
OtherInherited IRA, Global Account, Estate, PCRA workplace window, DAFgiving360 donor-advised fund, and the Intelligent Portfolios robo account ($5,000 minimum)

Coins stay out of IRAs because Schwab Crypto attaches only to a taxable Schwab One account. For crypto ETFs inside an IRA, Schwab states no rule either way.

Order Execution And Payment For Order Flow

Schwab routes stock and options orders to market makers and is paid for that flow. Its quarterly order-routing reports, which every broker files under Rule 606, show the equity schedule unchanged across the last three quarters, while options rates rose. Marketable orders fill at once, and non-marketable ones are limit orders that wait.

Marketable equity orders$0.001 per share or less, unchanged
Non-marketable equity orders$0.0033 per share or less, unchanged
Extended-hours equity orders$0.0006 per share or less, unchanged
Marketable optionsUp to $0.67 per contract, unchanged
Non-marketable optionsUp to $0.61, rising to up to $0.71 per contract
Complex optionsUp to $0.60, rising to up to $0.64 per contract
Net options payments$274.13M rising to $331.38M

The non-marketable options cap of $0.71 is now above the $0.65 fee Schwab charges clients per contract. Net options payments were $243.45M in Q4 2025, so they have risen two quarters running. Schwab states that all market makers pay it the same rate for a given order type.

In June 2026, Citadel handled 31.39% of Schwab's S&P 500 orders, Virtu 18.73% and Hudson River Trading 15.79%. In options, Dash/IMC took 26.53% and Citadel 25.80%.

Schwab reports $966 million in price improvement on exchange-listed equity orders in Q2 2026, with 97% of orders improved. Under the amended Rule 605 on execution quality, large brokers began collecting data on Aug. 1, 2026, and no Schwab report is due yet.

Order types run from market and stop-limit to trailing stops and one-cancels-other (OCO) brackets on thinkorswim.

Pre-market7:00 to 9:25 a.m. ET, limit orders only
After-hours4:05 to 8:00 p.m. ET, limit orders only
thinkorswim 24/5S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and Dow 30 stocks plus over 600 ETFs

Crypto is outside all of this, because CSPB is a bank and Schwab Crypto files no order-routing report. Its risk disclosure says firms that facilitate crypto trades generally have no duty to seek the best available terms.

Is Charles Schwab Safe? SIPC, Entities And Regulatory Record

Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. is the SIPC member. If it failed, SIPC would restore missing securities and cash up to $500,000, including $250,000 in cash. Market losses are not covered, and coins held at Charles Schwab Premier Bank are outside SIPC. The brokerage itself is not a bank, and bank sweep cash is held at Schwab's own banks and TD Bank program banks.

Insurance above SIPC, through Lloyd's of London, totals $600 million across all Schwab brokerage clients. At Dec. 31, 2025, CS&Co held net capital of $13.2 billion, $10.6 billion above its minimum.

Schwab's risk disclosure says client coins can be commingled in wallets with those of CSPB and Paxos. Its 10-Q says Paxos expects to hold client crypto in segregated accounts on a bankruptcy-remote basis, so Paxos's creditors could not claim them. The first describes the wallets, the second the legal accounts. Schwab discloses no cold-storage share, crypto insurance or proof of reserves.

The five-year record for CS&Co and the TD Ameritrade entities it absorbed:

The Massachusetts matter is the only pending regulatory event on BrokerCheck. No finding that Schwab misreported its order-routing or execution data appears on the records of CS&Co, TD Ameritrade, Inc. or TD Ameritrade Clearing. Schwab fixed a login outage during the Aug. 5, 2024 sell-off the same day. In 2025, text-message phishing kits built on Schwab-branded templates were used to take over brokerage accounts.

The largest action, the 2022 robo-cash order, was about how Schwab disclosed what uninvested cash earned, the same area where investors pay today. Most others are reporting failures. The pending Massachusetts matter is the one BrokerCheck files as involving customer assets.

Platform, Apps And Research Tools

thinkorswim, the center of Schwab's platform for active traders, runs on desktop, web and mobile. Schwab offers trading APIs but publishes no terms for individual investors.

thinkorswim And paperMoney

paperMoney, Schwab's paper-trading account, is built into every thinkorswim platform. The ETF Screener has a Morningstar Digital Assets filter, and ETF quote pages show expense ratios and holdings.

thinkorswim, iOS4.74 on 325,334 ratings

Of each app's newest 600 Google Play reviews, 59.3% (Schwab Mobile) and 68.5% (thinkorswim) are one or two stars. TD Ameritrade's former platform still comes up about 94 times in 1,550 recent app reviews.

Opening, Funding And Withdrawals

Schwab has no account minimum, and accounts funded by transfer are approved within five business days. ACH funding runs $1 to $100,000 per transfer. Incoming wires and ACATS transfers are free, and checks are accepted.

Electronic deposits and incoming wiresGenerally available for same-day trading

Outgoing wire$25, or $15 online. No ACH withdrawal fee listed
Full transfer out or closing$50, with fractional shares sold

Money sent by ACH may wait up to three business days before it can leave, and longer holds are a recurring complaint.

Support And Complaints

Support runs by chat, phone and email 24/7, with branches for in-person help and a separate Schwab Crypto phone line. Brokerage complaints can go through FINRA, but crypto complaints go to CSPB, a bank outside FINRA's oversight.

Trustpilot shows 1.5 out of 5 on 778 reviews, a small base for a firm with 39.8 million active brokerage accounts. In 80 recent reviews from April to September 2026, about 20 describe account restrictions or freezes and about 17 mention long phone waits. From September 2025 to September 2026, about 10 Trustpilot reviews report deposit or withdrawal holds past Schwab's policy, from four days to over a week. The most common praise is round-the-clock access to a live person.

The CFPB logged 353 complaints about Schwab's bank products in the 12 months to September 2026, mostly on checking. FINRA arbitration produced 11 awards involving CS&Co in 2026, the most since 2010.

Final Verdict

Schwab gives investors the broadest trading toolkit in our broker set, from thinkorswim and futures to direct foreign markets and nearly every spot crypto ETF. Its weakness is cash: every brokerage sweep pays 0.01% APY, and turning on options or Schwab Crypto moves that cash from FDIC bank sweep to broker-held Schwab One Interest. Active traders who keep cash in funds get the most from it.

Schwab Crypto is run by Charles Schwab Premier Bank, where account dollars are FDIC-eligible but coins are not.
