Interactive Brokers Review — Fees, Cash, Crypto, Safety, And Who It Suits

Verified Review
Published Updated

US investors who open an account at Interactive Brokers LLC get advanced trading tools and more markets than at any other broker CryptoSlate rates, which is where this Interactive Brokers review starts. The IBKR plan you pick when you apply sets your costs and what idle cash earns. The weak points are the cash formula and a support desk many customers say they cannot reach.

Interactive Brokers Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Up to 3.38% on cash above $10,000 with IBKR Pro
  • Direct access to foreign stock exchanges
  • No ACATS, account or inactivity fee
  • Direct routing and free algos on IBKR Pro

Cons

  • The first $10,000 of cash earns nothing
  • Top complaint: no reachable human
  • 36 regulatory events since September 2021
  • 44-business-day hold on ACH cash to another bank

Is Interactive Brokers Worth It?

You choose IBKR Lite or IBKR Pro when you apply, and you can switch later. On $100,000 of idle cash, IBKR Pro pays $900 a year more than IBKR Lite, the price of 360 IBKR Pro stock trades of 500 shares.

Frequent traders, margin borrowers and investors who buy shares listed abroad get the most from Interactive Brokers. A margin loan, meaning a loan from the broker secured by your holdings, costs at least a point less on IBKR Pro than on IBKR Lite.

Small balances fare worst, because cash under $10,000 earns nothing on either plan. An investor who keeps less than that earns from the first dollar in a Fidelity money market fund, and one who wants a phone answer gets Schwab's round-the-clock line.

IBKR Pro's margin rates and direct access to foreign exchanges are the reasons to sign up, and needing a person on the phone or a simple first app points elsewhere.

Who Interactive Brokers Suits And Who Should Skip It

IBKR rewards frequent trading and large balances.

Buy-And-Hold ETF InvestorFair. US-listed ETFs cost $0 on IBKR Lite, and fractional shares start at $1
Retirement Saver (IRA)Good. Every IRA type with no IRA fee listed, though no Solo 401(k) is listed
Options TraderGood. Four approval levels, $0.65 a contract on IBKR Lite, and $0.25 to $0.65 plus exchange and clearing fees on IBKR Pro
Active / Day TraderGood on IBKR Pro, with direct routing and free algos, algorithmic orders that work a large order automatically. Both plans trade an overnight session on 10,000+ US stocks and ETFs
Investor Holding A Lot Of CashGood at six figures. $100,000 in cash earns about $3,042 a year on IBKR Pro and $2,142 on IBKR Lite
Crypto BuyerFair. 20 coins that leave only through the provider's web app, with a 30-day lock on coins sent in and a 30-business-day lock on stablecoin-funded cash
Crypto ETF InvestorFair. 58 of the 62 open funds on CryptoSlate's list appear, and trading them needs IBKR's Complex or Leveraged ETP permission
Beginner With A Small AccountPoor. Cash under $10,000 earns nothing, and support is hard to reach

The account pays off most at six figures of cash or an IBKR Pro margin loan.

A first-time investor with a few thousand dollars gets little here that a simpler app lacks.

What You Can Invest In At Interactive Brokers

Interactive Brokers carries every core US investment type and adds direct trading on foreign exchanges. Futures trade at IB LLC, a futures commission merchant, the firm type allowed to hold futures accounts.

Since August 2024, IB LLC has offered regulated event contracts on ForecastEx LLC, an affiliated CFTC-registered exchange it clears for, at a $0 commission and a $0.01 exchange fee per contract.

Crypto At Interactive Brokers: Spot Crypto And Crypto ETFs

Interactive Brokers offers access to Bitcoin as a coin held by an outside provider. Spot Bitcoin ETFs appear in its product search, and trading them needs IBKR's Complex or Leveraged ETP permission. Interactive Brokers crypto trading runs through Zero Hash LLC, which trades as zerohash, or Paxos, and IBKR says it “is not party to any transactions in digital assets”. Coins at either provider are outside SIPC, the industry-funded body that covers customers of a failed member brokerage.

Spot Crypto Through Zero Hash And Paxos

Zero Hash LLC trades and holds coins for individual accounts, and Paxos does the same for joint, trust and organizational accounts. Paxos converted to a national trust bank chartered by the OCC, the federal regulator of national banks, in December 2025 by its own account. IBKR offers 20 coins, and Paxos accounts get fewer. Trades cost 0.12% to 0.18% of value by monthly volume, with a $1.75 minimum that never exceeds 1% of the trade. IRAs cannot hold spot crypto. IBKR lists no staking.

Since March 25, 2026, coins can be sent in, and they reach self-custody crypto wallets or crypto exchanges that serve US investors only through the Paxos or zerohash web app. A deposited coin is locked for 30 days, and USD funded with a stablecoin waits 30 business days before withdrawal. IBKR charges no fee to move crypto. Network fees may apply, set by Paxos or zerohash.

Crypto ETFs At Interactive Brokers: Bitcoin, Ether, Solana And XRP

58 of the 63 US crypto ETFs on CryptoSlate's list appear in Interactive Brokers' product search, with Solana, XRP and altcoin funds beside spot Bitcoin ETFs. IBKR's crypto page states that “Complex or Leveraged Exchange Traded Products trading permission is needed to trade cryptocurrency ETPs.” IBKR does not say whether an IRA can buy them.

Solana9 of 10One fund missing
XRP5 of 5Every fund on the list

One of the 63 has closed, so 58 of 62 open funds appear. A listing shows a fund can be found, not that each order is accepted. IBKR lists no ban on any crypto fund type.

Costs: What You Actually Pay At Interactive Brokers

At Interactive Brokers the plan sets the stock commission, $0 on IBKR Lite or per share on IBKR Pro. Fixed pricing is one flat rate, and Tiered pricing falls with volume and adds exchange and clearing fees. Options, margin and idle cash decide the rest of the bill.

Stocks / ETFs (online)$0 on IBKR Lite. $0.005 a share Fixed, or $0.0035 to $0.0005 Tiered plus fees, on IBKR Pro
Broker-Assisted Trade$30 per phone order, closing orders only

Mutual Funds (non-NTF)Lesser of 3% or $14.95
Account Maintenance$0
IRA FeesNone listed
Transfer Out (ACATS)$0
Inactivity$0
Margin Rate (smallest tier)6.380% on IBKR Lite, 5.380% on IBKR Pro
Outgoing Wire$10 after two free withdrawals a month
Spot Crypto0.12% to 0.18%, $1.75 minimum, 1% cap
Crypto WithdrawalNo IBKR fee. Coins sent in wait 30 days, then leave through the provider's web app. Network fees may apply, set by Paxos or zerohash

Buying 500 shares costs $2.50 on IBKR Pro Fixed pricing and $0 on IBKR Lite, a gap IBKR Pro offsets for investors with large idle cash or margin loans.

What This Table Does Not Include

No fund expense ratio appears in IBKR's schedule, because the fund, not IBKR, collects it. ETF sponsors reimburse IBKR Pro commissions on more than 150 ETFs held at least 30 days.

IBKR Lite vs IBKR Pro

IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro are two free pricing plans for the same IB LLC account, and IBKR Pro has no monthly fee. The first three switches between them process daily and later ones quarterly. IBKR Lite is open only to US residents with individual, joint or IRA accounts, or trusts whose trustees and beneficiaries are individuals.

An investor who rarely trades and keeps little cash gives up little on IBKR Lite, while a large cash holder pays for that choice.

Interactive Brokers Margin Rates

IBKR Lite charges 6.380% at every loan size, and IBKR Pro charges by tier.

Up to $100,0005.380%
$100,000 to $1 million4.880%
$1 million to $50 million4.630%
Above $50 million4.380%

A year of borrowing $50,000 costs $3,190 on IBKR Lite and $2,690 on IBKR Pro, simple interest.

Withdrawal, Inactivity And Market Data Fees

IBKR allows two free withdrawals each calendar month, then charges $1 by ACH, $4 by check or $10 by wire. Inactivity costs nothing for individual, joint, trust or organizational accounts on either plan. The optional $10 monthly US data bundle is waived in any month with $30 in commissions, and consolidated US options quotes (OPRA) cost $1.50, waived at $20.

Costs That Do Not Show On The Fee Page

  • IBKR receives part of each crypto commission as a referral fee, and IBKR's parent holds a strategic investment in Zero Hash Holdings. Paxos accounts pay a $0.15 monthly fee that IBKR passes through.
  • IBKR's Form CRS, the SEC-mandated disclosure of fees and conflicts, warns that exchange fees on IBKR Pro “may be greater than the costs paid by IBKR”.
  • On IBKR Lite, once orders outside regular hours, at the open or close, or in shares under $1 pass 10% of your monthly US share volume, the excess costs the lesser of $0.005 a share or 1% of trade value.
  • zerohash says it passes blockchain network fees through at cost on coins sent from its web app once the 30-day lock on deposited coins has passed.

Uninvested Cash: What It Earns And Who Holds It

A sweep moves idle cash into bank deposits or a fund automatically, and Interactive Brokers leaves it unswept by default. Money stays at IB LLC and earns interest by formula, and IBKR does not state a separate rule for IRA cash.

Cash at IB LLC, IBKR Pro3.380% above $10,000, scaled by account size
Cash at IB LLC, IBKR Lite2.380% above $10,000, scaled by account size
Insured Bank Deposit Sweep, IBKR Pro onlyThe IBKR Pro rate, opt-in
Money market funds and Treasury billsTheir own yield, by purchase

Cash at IB LLC falls under SIPC and IBKR's excess policy, a Lloyd's layer above SIPC, and neither pays unless the firm itself collapses. It has no FDIC cover, the federal insurance that pays out when a bank fails, unless an investor on IBKR Pro opts into the sweep.

How Interactive Brokers Pays Interest On Cash

IBKR pays nothing on the first $10,000 of uninvested cash. The rest earns the interest rate, 3.380% on IBKR Pro or 2.380% on IBKR Lite, which sit 0.5 and 1.5 points under IBKR's 3.88% benchmark. In an account worth less than $100,000, that rate shrinks in proportion to your net asset value, or NAV, the total value of your cash and holdings, so an account worth $50,000 earns half the rate.

$10,000 cash, either plan$0, nothing above the $10,000 floor
$100,000 all in cash, IBKR ProAbout $3,042 ($90,000 × 3.380%)
$100,000 all in cash, IBKR LiteAbout $2,142 ($90,000 × 2.380%)
$100,000 account with $20,000 cashAbout $338 on IBKR Pro and $238 on IBKR Lite ($10,000 × the rate)

Below about $24,800 of all-cash balance on IBKR Pro, or $31,000 on IBKR Lite, the rate on the whole cash balance drops under 0.5%, so the formula pays large balances close to the headline rate and small ones close to nothing.

The Insured Bank Deposit Sweep Program

The Insured Bank Deposit Sweep Program is opt-in and open only to IBKR Pro individual, joint, IRA and organizational accounts. It keeps the first $250,000 at IB LLC, under SIPC if the firm fails, and moves the rest to program banks, where FDIC insurance pays out if a program bank fails, up to $5 million for an individual account or $10 million for a joint one. Swept cash earns the IBKR Pro rate.

Account Types And Retirement

IBKR covers every IRA type and most personal accounts, with a $0 minimum on either plan.

Individual and joint taxableBoth plans, $0 minimum, $0 fee
Traditional, Roth, Rollover, SEP, SIMPLE and Inherited IRAOffered, no IRA minimum or fee listed
Custodial (UTMA/UGMA), run by an adult for a minorCash account only, no margin, IBKR Pro only
TrustOffered, on IBKR Lite only when trustees and beneficiaries are individuals

Interactive Brokers lists no Solo 401(k), HSA or 529 account on its account pages, so a self-employed saver or a family saving for college needs a second provider.

Interactive Brokers IRAs

Interactive Brokers IRAs carry no IRA fee or minimum listed, and IBKR lists no contribution match. Spot crypto is not available in any IRA, IBKR does not say whether an IRA can hold spot crypto ETFs, and IBKR Pro IRAs can join the Insured Bank Deposit Sweep.

Order Execution And Payment For Order Flow

IBKR files one Rule 606 report covering both plans. That quarterly report tallies which trading firms and exchanges got its orders and what each paid or charged. Payment for order flow is a per-order fee trading firms hand to the broker routing to them.

IBKR Lite sends orders to a small number of market makers that pay IBKR for them, Citadel Securities in early 2026 and then Citadel and Jane Street. A market maker is a firm that quotes buy and sell prices and earns the gap between them. Those firms pay 12% of the spread between the best national bid and offer on orders that fill right away and $0.27 per 100 shares on others. The 606 states that “A potential effect of these payments is reduced price improvement on executions received by IBKR-LITE clients.”

IBKR Pro orders go through IB SmartRouting to exchanges and alternative trading systems with no market-maker payment, and only IBKR Pro allows direct routing with free algorithmic orders. Across both plans' non-directed orders, where the client leaves routing to IBKR, no destination took more than 38.10% of S&P 500 stock orders in any month from January to June 2026.

Both plans trade overnight from 8:00 pm to 3:50 am ET, Sunday to Friday, on more than 10,000 US stocks and ETFs, with IBKR Lite paying Fixed pricing. Conditional and bracket orders come with either plan.

How Interactive Brokers Makes Money From Order Flow

Options brought in most of the money in both quarters, counting exchange rebates, the payments exchanges make for orders that add liquidity.

S&P 500 stocks$3.86 million, then $4.27 million
Other stocks$15.90 million, then $20.67 million
Options$35.88 million, then $47.27 million

IBKR's Form CRS lists order flow beside commissions, margin interest and interest on client cash as sources of income.

Is Interactive Brokers Safe? SIPC, Entities And Regulatory Record

Only a collapse of Interactive Brokers LLC triggers SIPC, which replaces client holdings the firm cannot hand back. Investment losses get no SIPC money, and coins at Zero Hash or Paxos are excluded.

What SIPC And Lloyd's Excess Coverage Protect

Should Interactive Brokers LLC collapse, SIPC covers each customer up to $500,000, with a $250,000 cash cap. IBKR states that its excess policy with underwriters at Lloyd's of London adds up to $30 million per account, including $900,000 for cash, with a $150 million cap across clients and futures excluded. Neither layer pays for a market loss.

IB LLC clears its own trades and reported net capital of $10.6 billion against $1.8 billion required at the end of 2025. IB LLC shows no pending regulatory events on BrokerCheck, where FINRA, the broker watchdog, posts every firm's history. It shows 92 final ones, 36 of them between September 2021 and September 2026 with about $86.8 million in fines. IBKR's annual report says it receives many regulatory inquiries each year, on subjects including best execution and margin lending, and identifies no open matter.

September 2021, CFTCSystems could not handle negative oil prices in April 2020. $1.75 million, after IB LLC paid 272 customers $82.57 million

The biggest penalties concern recordkeeping and sanctions screening. BrokerCheck lists 28 arbitration awards against IB LLC.

The Batchelar class action over automated margin liquidations closed on June 17, 2026, with Interactive Brokers Group, IBKR's parent, paying $5 million and IB LLC forgiving about $1.8 million of debt. A court-appointed receiver for EminiFX sued IB LLC, and that suit, dismissed in December 2025, is on appeal. In April 2025, IB LLC told customers that some of their information had reached an unauthorized third party and offered 24 months of credit monitoring.

Your securities and cash stay with a large firm fined often, mostly over controls and reporting, that has nothing pending on BrokerCheck and repaid customers in the 2021 negative-oil and 2022 fee-overcharge cases.

Platform, Apps And Research Tools

Interactive Brokers offers Trader Workstation, IBKR Desktop, paper trading and APIs on both plans, and lists 55 research providers. IBKR Mobile rates 4.50 stars on 11,485 US App Store ratings and 4.53 on 75,806 Google Play ratings, yet 62% of the 50 most recent written App Store reviews and 66% on Google Play give one or two stars. Login lockouts top recent Google Play complaints from IBKR's customers worldwide, with the IB Key security app tied to one phone and a passkey switch from July 2026.

Trader Workstation, IBKR Desktop And Paper Trading

Trader Workstation, TWS for short, is IBKR's full desktop platform, and paper trading uses simulated funds. IBKR Desktop is a second desktop app, Client Portal runs in a browser, and IBKR GlobalTrader is a simpler phone app. Developers get the Web API, the TWS API in Python, Java, C++ and C#, and FIX.

Opening, Funding And Withdrawals

There is no Interactive Brokers minimum deposit on either plan, and money comes in by ACH, wire, Wise, check or online bill pay. Individual accounts can fund with a stablecoin, and that cash waits 30 business days to leave. An ACATS transfer carries every holding to the receiving broker at once and costs $0.

Interactive Brokers Deposit Holds And Withdrawal Timing

Deposits become tradable before they become withdrawable, so an account can show cash that cannot leave yet.

First ACH deposit, tradingFour business days
ACH money back to the same bankFive business days
ACH money to a different bank44 business days
Check, tradingSeven business days
USD funded by stablecoin, withdrawal30 business days
Coins sent in to Paxos or zerohash30 days, then out only through the provider's web app

Customers' reports match these rules, with Reddit posts from February and April 2026 describing the 44-business-day hold and about 10 posts citing four- to five-business-day first-deposit holds.

Support And Complaints

Interactive Brokers lists phone support from Sunday afternoon to Friday evening Eastern Time, and live chat. It has no branches. The most common complaint in reviews from IBKR's customers worldwide from September 2025 to September 2026 is that no human is reachable, sharpest from February to August 2026, with several saying the phone menu sends callers to a web ticket and hangs up.

About 45 posts on r/interactivebrokers and 18 of the 80 most recent Trustpilot reviews, from IBKR's customers worldwide, describe failed attempts to reach a person. A letter IB LLC sent customers gave shorter hours than the support page lists. In April 2025, FINRA fined IB LLC $400,000 for reporting inaccurate statistics on written customer complaints. Unresolved disputes can go to FINRA arbitration.

Applications rejected or stuck in review are another IBKR-wide theme, mostly from non-US applicants. About 21 Reddit posts between September 2025 and July 2026 report automatic liquidations or warnings. Trustpilot shows 3.1 from 5,503 reviews.

Interactive Brokers Alternatives

Investors who hold little cash, want a phone answer, a simpler app or cheaper options have four US brokers to weigh against IBKR.

FidelityIdle cash and branches. A money market fund you can choose earns from the first dollar, but crypto carries a 1% fee at a separate Fidelity entity
Charles SchwabPhone help around the clock, plus Schwab's thinkorswim platform, while default cash earns 0.01%
tastytradeOptions traders. $1 to open equity options, $0 to close, $10 leg cap, but no published cash rate
WebullA simpler app with paper trading and an overnight session. Cash earns nothing until you opt in, and an ACATS transfer out costs $75

Foreign access and IBKR Pro margin rates keep IBKR ahead.

FAQ

Is Interactive Brokers safe?

Your securities and cash at Interactive Brokers LLC carry SIPC protection, which applies if the firm fails and assets go missing, never if the market drops. IBKR adds a Lloyd’s of London policy of up to $30 million per account with a $900,000 cash limit. Crypto at Zero Hash or Paxos has no SIPC cover.

What does Interactive Brokers charge?

US-listed stocks and ETFs cost nothing on IBKR Lite, and IBKR Pro charges $0.005 a share on Fixed pricing, or $0.0035 down to $0.0005 plus exchange fees on Tiered. Options cost $0.65 a contract on IBKR Lite and $0.25 to $0.65 plus fees on IBKR Pro. Neither plan charges an account, inactivity or ACATS fee.

What interest does Interactive Brokers pay on cash?

Nothing on your first $10,000, then 3.380% on IBKR Pro or 2.380% on IBKR Lite. Below $100,000 of account value the rate is cut in proportion, so an $80,000 IBKR Pro account holding $20,000 in cash earns 1.352% on that cash.

Can I buy crypto or Bitcoin ETFs on Interactive Brokers?

You can buy coins. An individual account buys them through Zero Hash LLC, and a joint, trust or organizational account through Paxos, both outside the brokerage account. All 13 spot Bitcoin ETFs on CryptoSlate’s list appear in Interactive Brokers’ product search, and trading any crypto ETF needs IBKR’s Complex or Leveraged ETP permission.

Can I hold crypto in an Interactive Brokers IRA?

Coins are out, because IBKR offers no crypto trading in IRAs. Its IRA pages set no written rule for spot crypto ETFs.

What is the difference between IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro?

On IBKR Lite, US-listed stocks and ETFs cost $0 and go to market makers that pay IBKR. IBKR Pro charges by the share, routes orders without market-maker payments, pays one point more on cash and charges at least one point less for margin. Only IBKR Pro can join the Insured Bank Deposit Sweep, and neither plan has a monthly fee.

Why can't I withdraw all my money from Interactive Brokers?

New money cannot leave until its hold ends. ACH money can go back to the bank it came from after five business days, but IBKR holds it 44 business days before sending it to any other bank. Stablecoin-funded cash waits 30 business days, and coins sent in stay locked 30 days, then leave through the provider’s web app.

What are Interactive Brokers' margin rates?

IBKR Pro charges 5.380% on the first $100,000 borrowed, with lower rates on larger loans down to 4.380% above $50 million. IBKR Lite charges a flat 6.380%. Both sit over IBKR’s 3.88% benchmark.
