Visa is hiring a software engineer tasked with using AI tools to work with blockchain smart contracts, a company executive tweeted on April 24.

Visa could make use of GitHub Copilot

Cuy Sheffield, Visa’s Head of Crypto, wrote that the firm is:

“Particularly interested in [software engineers with] experience using Github Copilot and other AI assisted engineering tools to write and debug smart contracts.”

GitHub Copilot is an AI-powered programming tool that is able to suggest code within the user’s code editor based on natural language prompts.

Individuals have tested GitHub Copilot with mixed results. One developer reported great success in using GitHub Copilot to refactor or “clean up” smart contract code. Another reported that the application leaked an Ethereum private key and expressed uncertainty about the application’s security.

Engineer will also work with public blockchains

Sheffield also said that Visa’s new hire would assist in driving the adoption of public blockchains and stablecoins. Visa is, in fact, already working on such initiatives, having announced new stablecoin and CBDC plans in January.

The company also began to settle USDC transactions on Ethereum as early as 2021. Visa additionally powers payment cards for a number of popular crypto companies, including Crypto.com, Binance, Coinbase, and others.

Visa said in February that it would not dial back its crypto efforts.
