Since 2016 MetaMask has been the wallet Ethereum users start with, a self-custody browser extension and mobile app that now signs natively on Solana, Bitcoin, and Tron from one recovery phrase. It leads the mainstream hot wallets on security defaults, and no rival matches how many protocols support it out of the box. Ubiquity carries a bill, paid in what the wallet charges to swap and in how relentlessly scammers build against its users first. How far the reach offsets that bill is the question the verdict answers.

Who MetaMask is Best For — and Who Should Skip It

MetaMask is for the active EVM and DeFi user who touches dApps weekly and wants one wallet that now also covers Solana, Bitcoin, and Tron.

  • Get it if you use Ethereum dApps regularly, want the widest protocol compatibility available, and will pair a hardware wallet for anything you would mind losing.
  • Get it if you want one recovery phrase covering EVM chains, Solana, Bitcoin, and Tron instead of three wallets.
  • Skip it if you swap frequently and care about fees — Rabby at 0.25% or a direct aggregator prices the same trades better.
  • Skip it if in-wallet ETH staking is the point and you are in the US or UK, because MetaMask's staking is closed to you.
  • Skip it if OSI open source or reproducible builds are a requirement, or if you want cold storage rather than a hot wallet.

What is MetaMask and How Does it Work?

MetaMask is the self-custody wallet from Consensys, the US company founded by Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, and it has been the default way into Ethereum since 2016. Over 100 million people have used it, which makes it less a product choice than the standard interface most dApps assume you have installed.

The name now covers a product family. This review scores the wallet — the browser extension and mobile app. The MetaMask Card (a self-custodial Mastercard debit) and the Money Account (a stablecoin yield account launched June 30, 2026) are separate products, covered briefly below but not folded into this score.

Security and Custody

Custody is the clean part. MetaMask is fully non-custodial: your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase generates every key on your device, and Consensys holds nothing it could freeze, seize, or reset. The staking products and the Card keep that model — assets stay on-chain under your keys until the moment they are spent or staked into a contract you signed.

The code story needs precision, because it is widely misstated. MetaMask left its MIT license in 2020 and has been source-available under a custom proprietary license since — free for end users, with commercial use restricted for entities over 10,000 monthly active users. The major repositories are public and readable, but this is not OSI-approved open source, there is no reproducible-build process, and third-party audit coverage is fragmented across components. Fully open rivals such as Rabby beat it on this pillar.

As a hot wallet, MetaMask has no secure element. Keys live encrypted on an internet-connected device, so the defenses are procedural: transaction simulation is on by default and shows you what a signature will actually move before you approve it, security alerts flag known-malicious addresses and contracts, Consensys runs a HackerOne bug bounty, and MetaMask is a member of the SEAL phishing-defense network. Pairing a Ledger or Trezor moves signing onto a hardware device and is the single best upgrade for any meaningful balance.

Incident History and The Drainer Problem

MetaMask's own record has two disclosed incidents, neither a custody breach. In 2022 a disk-cache issue could expose the Secret Recovery Phrase in unencrypted form on disk under specific conditions, patched after disclosure. In 2023 a breach at a third-party support vendor exposed data belonging to roughly 7,000 users who had contacted support — personal data, not keys. The wallet itself has never suffered a protocol or custody breach.

The larger risk sits outside Consensys's code. Because MetaMask is the biggest target, it is the most drainer- and phishing-targeted wallet in crypto: approval drainers, address poisoning, and EIP-7702 delegation abuse are all built and tested against MetaMask users first. These attacks steal by tricking you into signing, not by breaking the wallet, and the default simulation and alerts exist precisely to counter them. They reduce the risk, not remove it.

Supported Chains and Assets

MetaMask spent its first nine years as an EVM-only wallet. That changed in three steps: native Solana support arrived in May 2025, Bitcoin rolled out in December 2025, and Tron followed in January 2026 on both mobile and the extension. The multichain account model derives one EVM address, one Solana address, and one Bitcoin address from the same recovery phrase, so there is no second seed to manage.

On the EVM side, coverage spans Ethereum and the major L2s — Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Base, Avalanche, and BNB Chain — with custom RPC support for the long tail. Token standards cover ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155, plus SPL on Solana, TRC-20 on Tron, and native BTC.

The honest comparison: dedicated single-chain wallets still do their home chain better. Phantom is deeper on Solana, and a BTC-focused wallet handles ordinals and fee control better than MetaMask does. What MetaMask now offers is credible coverage of four ecosystems behind one phrase, which no other mainstream EVM wallet matches.

Usability and Recovery

Setup takes minutes on any major browser or phone, and cross-device use is a matter of importing the same phrase. For dApp work, MetaMask remains the connection button virtually every EVM protocol builds against first, which in practice means fewer broken connections and better-tested flows than any rival.

Recovery is the sharp edge. The Secret Recovery Phrase is the only recovery path — no social recovery, no passkeys, no MPC shards. Lose the phrase and the funds are gone, with no support ticket that can help. Anyone who obtains the phrase owns the funds just as completely. That is standard self-custody, but wallets like Phantom offer an optional cloud-login onboarding lane that MetaMask has chosen not to build, so back up the phrase offline and treat it as the asset it is.

Signing happens on the same device that browses the web, which is the structural weakness of every hot wallet: a compromised browser or phone can misrepresent what you are approving. Hardware pairing closes that gap by putting the confirmation screen on a separate device.

Features

Swaps

MetaMask Swaps aggregates quotes across DEXs and adds a 0.875% service fee, baked into the quoted rate rather than itemized, on top of pool fees that typically run 0.05–0.3%. The aggregation is convenient and the routing is good. The price is high — Rabby charges 0.25% for its equivalent, and going directly to an aggregator can cost less still.

Staking

MetaMask offers ETH pooled staking (any amount, built on StakeWise smart contracts with Consensys-operated validators) and full 32-ETH validator staking. Both are unavailable to US and UK users for regulatory reasons — a US reader cannot stake ETH inside MetaMask today, and any review calling its staking “full” is wrong for two of its largest markets. TRX staking exists but only in the mobile app, where it earns Tron Bandwidth and Energy. Beyond ETH, MetaMask's staking docs also cover MATIC (Polygon) through liquid-staking providers such as Lido, Rocket Pool, and Stader.

Buying and Selling

Fiat on- and off-ramps run through third-party providers. On purchases MetaMask adds a fee of about 1% on top of partner pricing and network costs. It works in dozens of countries, and it is a convenience rail, not the cheap way to acquire crypto.

MetaMask Card and Money Account

The Card is a self-custodial Mastercard debit, live in 49 US states, that converts on-chain balances (mUSD, USDC, USDT, wETH, and others across Linea, Base, and Monad) to fiat at the point of sale, with up to 1% cashback in mUSD on the standard tier and 3% on metal. Unlike custodial exchange cards, funds stay under your keys until the moment of purchase. The Money Account, launched June 30, 2026, converts stablecoins 1:1 into mUSD on Monad and pays a variable yield of around 4% APY, again self-custodially. Both are separate products with their own terms and are not scored here.

The Pending MASK Token

Lubin confirmed in September 2025 that a MetaMask token is coming. As of this review it has not launched, and MetaMask Rewards seasons currently pay out LINEA. Treat any airdrop expectation as speculation, and be wary of the farming hype and the fake-claim phishing sites that follow every anticipated token.

Cost

The app is free, and for holding and receiving it stays free apart from network gas. The real costs are transactional. Swap $10,000 through MetaMask in a year and the service fee alone is $87.50 before pool fees and gas. Buy $5,000 through the on-ramp and MetaMask's cut is about $50 before partner pricing. None of this is hidden — the quote shows the final rate — but frequent traders pay materially more here than through Rabby or a direct aggregator. The convenience is real. So is the markup.

MetaMask

Final Verdict

8.2 reflects a wallet that leads its category with real asterisks attached. Custody integrity is flawless, the security defaults (simulation, alerts, hardware pairing) are the best of the mainstream hot wallets, the multichain expansion is genuine rather than marketing, and the two disclosed incidents were peripheral and handled openly. Against that: the swap and ramp fees are above market, the license is proprietary despite public repositories, ETH staking excludes American and British users entirely, and MetaMask's size makes its users the primary target of every new drainer technique. A hardware wallet beats it for storage, and cheaper tools beat it for trading. As the daily driver for on-chain activity, nothing else is as universally supported.

FAQ

Is MetaMask safe?

The wallet itself has never had a custody breach, and its two disclosed incidents (a 2022 disk-cache phrase-exposure bug and a 2023 support-vendor data breach affecting roughly 7,000 users) did not compromise funds at the protocol level. The dominant risk is phishing and drainer contracts targeting users, which the default transaction simulation and security alerts mitigate but cannot eliminate. Pair a hardware wallet for large balances.

Is MetaMask open source?

No. It has been source-available under a custom proprietary license since 2020, when it left the MIT license. The major repositories are public and anyone can read the code, but the license restricts commercial use and is not OSI-approved, so “open source” is inaccurate.

Can US users stake ETH in MetaMask?

No. Both pooled staking and 32-ETH validator staking are unavailable to US and UK users. US users can still hold, send, swap, and use the MetaMask Card. TRX staking on mobile is the exception on the staking side.

Does MetaMask support Bitcoin and Solana?

Yes, natively. Solana support arrived in May 2025, Bitcoin in December 2025, and Tron in January 2026. All derive from the same Secret Recovery Phrase through multichain accounts, with no separate seed.

What does MetaMask cost?

The app is free. Swaps carry a 0.875% MetaMask service fee inside the quote plus pool fees, fiat purchases add about 1% on top of partner pricing, and every transaction pays network gas.

Is the MetaMask Card the same as the wallet?

No. The Card is a separate self-custodial Mastercard debit product, live in 49 US states, that converts on-chain balances to fiat at the point of sale. It shares the self-custody model but has its own terms, tiers, and cashback rates, and it is not part of this wallet score.

Does MetaMask have a token?

Not yet. Consensys confirmed in September 2025 that a MASK token is coming, but it has not launched, and current MetaMask Rewards seasons pay LINEA. Ignore any site claiming to offer an early claim — those are phishing.
