Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, has announced her departure from the company after six and a half years. In a message to colleagues, Murati expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the technical organization and highlighted recent achievements, including the releases of speech-to-speech technology and OpenAI o1.

“While I’ll express my gratitude to many individuals in the coming days, I want to start by thanking Sam [Altman] and Greg [Brockman] for their trust in me to lead the technical organization and for their support throughout the years,” Murati wrote. She emphasized the team’s role in advancing artificial intelligence, stating, “We didn’t merely build smarter models; we fundamentally changed how AI systems learn and reason through complex problems.”

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, responded to her announcement, saying, “It’s hard to overstate how much Mira has meant to OpenAI, our mission, and to us all personally.” He acknowledged her significant contributions to the company’s evolution from an unknown research lab to a leading AI entity.

Murati’s departure is part of a series of leadership changes at OpenAI. Ilya Sutskever, the chief scientist, stepped down in May 2024, expressing concerns about the company’s safeguards against AI misuse. Jan Leike, former safety director, also left the company in May. Additionally, co-founder John Schulman moved to rival AI startup Anthropic in August, and Greg Brockman, co-founder and president, announced an extended leave of absence until the end of the year.

In an internal note, Altman announced that Mark is stepping into the role of Senior Vice President of Research, partnering with Jakub [Pachocki] as Chief Scientist. “Mark obviously has deep technical expertise, but he has also learned how to be a leader and manager in a very impressive way,” Altman stated. He added that Bob [McGrew] and Barret [Zoph] have also decided to depart, and new leadership will include Kevin [Weil] and Srinivas [Narayanan] continuing to lead the Applied team, with Matt Knight serving as Chief Information Security Officer.

OpenAI is undergoing significant organizational shifts while continuing to innovate. In May 2024, the company introduced improvements to data analysis in ChatGPT. July saw the launch of SearchGPT, a prototype featuring new AI search capabilities. In September, OpenAI unveiled “OpenAI o1,” marking what Murati described as “the beginning of a new era in interaction and intelligence.”

OpenAI raises funds amid shake up

Financial developments are also shaping OpenAI’s trajectory. The company is reportedly in negotiations with Microsoft, Nvidia, Apple, and other entities for a new investment round that could value the company at up to $150 billion, a substantial increase from its previous $80 billion valuation. Microsoft, which has already invested $10 billion for a 49% stake, is expected to provide further financial support. Thrive Capital has pledged $1 billion toward OpenAI.

Despite leadership changes, the company is retaining its commitment to advancing AI technology while ensuring safety remains a priority. Murati noted the importance of bringing safety research into practical applications, creating models that are “more robust, aligned, and steerable than ever before.” She expressed confidence in the team’s ability to continue pushing the boundaries of scientific understanding to improve human well-being.

“I’m stepping away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration,” Murati wrote. “For now, my primary focus is doing everything in my power to ensure a smooth transition, maintaining the momentum we’ve built.”

Altman acknowledged the intensity of leadership roles at OpenAI, stating, “Being a leader at OpenAI is all-consuming. On one hand, it’s a privilege to build AGI and be the fastest-growing company that gets to put our advanced research in the hands of hundreds of millions of people. On the other hand, it’s relentless to lead a team through it.”

The departures of key figures like Murati reflect a period of transformation for OpenAI. The company faces the challenge of sustaining rapid growth and innovation while navigating leadership transitions and ensuring the ethical development of artificial intelligence.

Further, competition from the likes of Anthropic and Meta is heating up. Yesterday, Meta launched a new series of chatbots voiced by celebrities, including Awkwafina, Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, Keegan Michael Key, and Kristen Bell. The bots are able to engage in a wide range of ways, including sharing images, voice chat, translations, and image editing.
