Trump Media’s 5,278 BTC vanishes from trackers after $165 million wallet move

Trump Media’s liquid Bitcoin treasury appears to have mathematically evaporated overnight, but here is why blockchain data doesn't equal a corporate sell-off.

Quick Take

  1. Two reported movements total 5,278 BTC, just 3.43 BTC below Trump Media’s March balance outside note collateral.
  2. A tracker alleged a $165.07 million sale, but wallet data alone cannot prove execution or a loss of control.
  3. Custody, collateral and later treasury activity could all change the conditional 3.43 BTC reconciliation.

Trump Media’s Bitcoin holdings came under renewed scrutiny after the company moved 2,628 BTC on Aug. 2, bringing the sum of two recently reported transfers to within 3.43 BTC of the portion of its March holdings not identified as convertible-note collateral.

The near-match puts the latest wallet activity at the center of a question about what remains of Trump Media’s quarter-end Bitcoin treasury once note collateral is separated out.

Trump Media reported 9,542.16 BTC as of March 31, including 4,260.73 BTC serving as note collateral. Subtracting those figures produces 5,281.43 BTC, though the company did not label that difference liquid or unencumbered.

The same filing separately said Trump Media had pledged 2,000 BTC under covered-call arrangements on 4,000 BTC. The counterparty could reuse that collateral, and the options had a June 30 expiry date. The collateral’s post-expiry status remains undisclosed.

CryptoSlate reported that about 2,650 BTC moved from Trump Media-linked wallets on May 22 in two deposits to a Crypto.com-linked address.

The second data point came on Aug. 2, when Lookonchain, a blockchain analytics account, said Trump Media appeared to have sold another 2,628 BTC for about $165.07 million.

Together, the two reported movements total 5,278 BTC, producing an arithmetic remainder of 3.43 BTC against the 5,281.43 BTC March figure.

What Trump Media’s Bitcoin holdings still do not reveal

The reconciliation describes Trump Media’s holdings only if the tracker attributions are correct, both blocks came from the March 31 arithmetic residual, the company relinquished control of the coins, and no purchases, sales, collateral changes, or custody reclassifications intervened.

Although social media may suggest otherwise, the Lookonchain post does not provide evidence of trade execution or identify the full transaction path, final destination, or post-transfer control.

Arkham Intelligence’s Trump Media entity cluster is also an analytics-company attribution, not a corporate custody record. Wallet labels and visible balances cannot show every asset held through custodians or determine whether transferred coins remain under the company’s control.

Trump Media said in 2025 that Crypto.com and Anchorage Digital would provide custody for its Bitcoin treasury. That makes a Crypto.com-linked destination insufficient on its own to distinguish a sale from a custody transfer or another treasury movement.

Interim CEO Kevin McGurn said on May 26 that treasury movements generally reflected account diversification for security and efforts to earn yield. He did not connect that explanation to specific coins or provide an updated Bitcoin count.

The filing-to-tracker comparison therefore answers only the arithmetic question: 3.43 BTC remains unmatched. Trump Media’s current liquid balance, the disposition of both reported blocks, and the status of its separate hedge collateral require a company or custodian reconciliation.
