Ripple opens Wall Street’s door to Hyperliquid’s $59 billion trading market

Ripple Prime is giving institutions access to more than 100 traditional financial markets through blockchain-linked swaps, with RLUSD accepted as collateral.

Quick Take

  1. Ripple Prime now offers 24/7 swaps tied to 100+ TradFi markets, using Trade.xyz prices as references.
  2. Cross-margining and RLUSD can cut funding needs, but weekend repricing may trigger sharp margin calls.
  3. The unresolved risk is how Ripple hedges exposure while underlying markets are closed.

Institutions trade swaps referencing more than 100 traditional financial markets around the clock, with Ripple Prime as the principal counterparty, Ripple announced on Oct. 15.

The swaps cover stocks, equity indices, ETFs, metals, energy and foreign exchange, and they reference perpetual contracts that Trade.xyz lists on Hyperliquid.

The structure offered by Ripple

Ripple offers consolidated margining across the supported asset classes and accepts RLUSD as eligible collateral, subject to jurisdiction. The product runs through Ripple Prime's British Virgin Islands entity, with other regions planned.

It builds on Ripple Prime's February Hyperliquid integration and the total-return swaps on equities, indices and digital assets that Ripple announced in August, so the new elements are the Trade.xyz reference markets and continuous trading.

0xArchive reports that Trade.xyz handled $59.4 billion of perpetual volume in September, 23.9% of Hyperliquid's total, across 110 listed markets. Weekend volume averaged $541 million a day, and all of these are venue-wide figures.

Pricing when stock exchanges close

Trade.xyz's oracle references conventional prices during external trading sessions and switches to internal pricing from its own order book when those inputs go quiet, with the oracle adjusting toward that book over 30 minutes.

For Tesla, the venue's specification lists a plus or minus 5% discovery bound with two resets in each direction, and external pricing runs from Sunday evening to Friday evening Eastern.

An 0xArchive study of 614 market-weekends found the final weekend price closer to the reopening price than the Friday close in 70.7% of observations, with median absolute error falling from 113.3 to 53.4 basis points.

The sample required at least $1 million of weekend volume per observation, and the Hyperliquid Policy Center funded the research.

If an institution using Ripple's structure holds $10 million long at a $100 Friday reference, and the synthetic market climbs 4% to $104 while the stock exchange is closed, the position shows about $400,000 of mark-to-market gain.

If the stock reopens at $101, the derivative has to realign, a gap of about 2.9% of the weekend price, and the prime broker's margin and hedge adjustments fall in that window.

Cross-margining and RLUSD

Pooled margin can lower collateral needs when positions offset, and Virtu's Scotte Moegling pointed to the efficiency of 24/7 cross-margining. In a hypothetical $100 million portfolio of $60 million equity swaps at 12% margin and $40 million energy swaps at 15%, an assumed 25% offset cuts requirements from $13.2 million to $9.9 million.

With $15 million of RLUSD posted at an assumed 5% haircut, headroom is $4.3 million. A 6% equity decline, a 7% energy decline, and RLUSD at $0.99 turn that into a $2.2 million shortfall.

Standard Custody & Trust Company, a New York-regulated trust company, issues RLUSD, and Ripple's Oct. 8 dashboard reports $2.6 billion in reserves against over $2.4 billion in circulation, 105.8% coverage on issuer-reported balances.

Trade.xyz perpetuals settle in USDC on Hyperliquid, and RLUSD serves as Ripple Prime client collateral, so they operate under separate arrangements.

Ripple's general risk disclosures cover collateral calls, basis risk, liquidity constraints, counterparty and insolvency exposure, operational failures and stablecoin depegging.

The Bank for International Settlements' March 2026 summary on margin liquidity names leverage, concentration, interconnectedness and rapid collateral calls as sources of vulnerability, citing Archegos and the 2022 UK pension crisis.

Regulators are also working on market hours and margin. The CFTC issued guidance on 24/7 trading in May, and the SEC and CFTC requested comment in June on portfolio-margin harmonization across securities, futures and swaps.

Where the Ripple offer goes from here

Ripple's announcement describes the product structure and leaves position sizes, Virtu's volumes, collateral haircuts, margin schedules and default protections undisclosed. Each client position could be hedged on Hyperliquid, in another market, or internally.

If margin methodology holds and weekend prices keep tracking reopenings, prime brokers become a gateway into on-chain markets, with volume migrating to blockchain infrastructure while institutions keep their existing relationships.

RLUSD would gain a collateral use that Ripple has left unquantified, and XRP sits outside the collateral and settlement mechanics in the announcement.

If correlations rise while underlying markets are closed and haircuts widen, margin calls arrive when positions are hardest to adjust, and the hedging arrangement determines how much venue activity reaches Ripple Prime's books.
