Mark Uyeda Bio
Mark Toshiro Uyeda is an American attorney and government official, currently serving as the Acting Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He was appointed to this position by the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump. Uyeda is the first Asian PacificAmerican to serve as an SEC Commissioner.
Born into a Japanese American family, Uyedaโs grandfather, Mac Yukihiro, rebuilt the family business after the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Uyeda graduated from Georgetown University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and earned his Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law, where he served as notes editor for the Duke Law Journal.
Legal Career
Uyeda began his career as an associate at K&L Gates and later at OโMelveny & Myers in Los Angeles. He also served as a senior advisor to the California Department of Corporations. In 2006, he joined the SEC as an attorney-advisor and later worked for SEC Chair Jay Clayton and Commissioner Michael Piwowar. Uyeda also served on detail as a Republican staffer for the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
SEC Commissioner and Acting Chair
In April 2022, President Joe Biden nominated Uyeda to the SEC, and he was confirmed on June 16, 2022. In December 2023, Uyeda began his second term as Commissioner. In January 2025, he was appointed Acting Chair of the SEC by President Donald Trump.
Legacy
Mark Uyedaโs tenure is notable for his focus on balanced regulation, advocacy for transparent rule-making processes, and his historic role as the first Asian Pacific American to hold leadership positions at the SEC.
