Is Vanguard Worth It?
The cash line matters more than any trading fee for most accounts, because money waiting to be invested earns a fund rate. The bills start at the exit, and the limits start when an investor wants coins rather than ETFs.
Buying funds or ETFs and holding them for years is the pattern Vanguard rewards. Its best feature is where cash waits. Unless an investor picks otherwise, spare cash goes to Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund, a mutual fund holding short-term US government debt. It pays more than either of Vanguard's FDIC-insured bank sweeps.
Vanguard falls short on trading, with four basic order types and no trailing stops, a 7-calendar-day hold on bank-transfer money and no coins for sale. Frequent traders and investors planning to switch brokers soon should compare alternatives first.
Vanguard makes a low-maintenance home for funds and idle cash, and a poor fit for active trading or direct crypto ownership.
Who Vanguard Suits And Who Should Skip It
Two habits settle the fit at Vanguard, how often an investor trades and where spare cash waits between purchases.
An account that buys a fund each month and otherwise stays put owes no recurring fee once e-delivery is on.
An account that trades weekly runs into the missing trailing stops first, then the 7-day wait on each new deposit.
What You Can Invest In At Vanguard
Stocks, ETFs, options, mutual funds and bonds all trade through Vanguard Brokerage Services, a division of Vanguard Marketing Corporation, but only Vanguard's own funds can be bought in dollar amounts. Futures and spot crypto are not offered.
An investor with $50 for an outside ETF or a single stock can buy whole shares only. Anyone who might switch brokers later loses any fractional position to a forced sale.
Crypto At Vanguard: Spot Crypto And Crypto ETFs
Vanguard sells no spot crypto and runs no crypto company, so buying coins or opening a crypto IRA takes a separate account at one of the US crypto exchanges. Kraken and Coinbase are two of them, covered in our Kraken exchange review and Coinbase exchange review. No coin can be staked through Vanguard, which leaves crypto staking rewards to exchanges. Crypto ETFs bought here are securities held in the brokerage account, and SIPC covers them only if the broker fails.
Vanguard's Crypto ETF Policy And The Memecoin ETF Ban
Vanguard's crypto ETF policy began as a block, with spot Bitcoin ETF purchases refused when the funds launched on January 11, 2024. A day later it stopped buys of the Bitcoin futures ETFs it had allowed before. The reversal was announced on December 1, 2025, and took effect on December 2, 2025.
Vanguard's crypto page describes what the rule covers in two ways. Its opening line allows trading of “select third-party cryptocurrency ETFs and mutual funds”, while the body refers to a decision to allow “most third-party cryptocurrency ETFs and mutual funds”. No list of barred funds backs either word.
The one explicit ban appears on a complex-products page, which reads “Vanguard Brokerage does not accept purchases in select alternative investments and complex products such as leveraged or inverse products, ETNs, and Memecoin ETFs.” Vanguard never defines a Memecoin ETF, and leveraged crypto funds fall under the leveraged ban.
These rules appear in education pages, not in the brokerage agreement, so Vanguard can revise them without updating the agreement.
Bitcoin, Ether, Solana And XRP ETFs At Vanguard
Vanguard lists all 13 spot Bitcoin ETFs among 58 of the 62 spot crypto ETFs still open. Hashdex's DEFI, which would have made 63, closed in August 2026.
| Asset | Spot ETFs Listed At Vanguard | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | 13 of 13 | Includes IBIT, FBTC and GBTC |
| Ethereum | 11 of 12 | Legacy CETH ticker is not listed |
| Solana | 9 of 10 | OSOL is not listed |
| XRP | 5 of 5 | All five listed |
| Other altcoins | 20 of 22 | Includes Dogecoin ETFs GDOG, BWOW and TDOG. NRR and GBNB are not listed |
A Buy button on a fund page does not mean Vanguard accepts the order. Leveraged funds it bars show the same button, and Vanguard does not say which crypto tickers it accepts or whether its memecoin clause reaches the Dogecoin funds. None is fractional, and Vanguard publishes no rule on crypto ETFs in IRAs.
Costs: What You Actually Pay At Vanguard
Vanguard's costs come from the account fee, the exit fee and the rules that waive them, not from commissions. Fee thresholds count money held at Vanguard, which the fee schedule calls qualifying assets.
On e-delivery, a buy-and-hold investor avoids the account fee and pays no commissions. The securities transaction fee on sales still applies. Beyond that fee, an investor pays for paper statements, options contracts and leaving the broker.
What This Table Does Not Include
Expense ratios on Vanguard's own funds and ETFs, which The Vanguard Group manages, work like any fund's, and the broker never bills them. Vanguard Marketing Corporation is paid by The Vanguard Group for distributing those funds, indirectly out of their expense ratios.
Vanguard Account Service And Transfer-Out Fees
The $25 annual account service fee applies per account, IRAs included. It is waived by e-delivery, $1 million at Vanguard, a Cash Plus account, a trust registered under its own tax ID (EIN) or an account in a Vanguard advisory service.
The $100 processing fee applies to each closure and each full transfer to another firm through ACATS, the industry system for moving brokerage accounts. Bank transfers of cash do not trigger it, and clients with $5 million or more at Vanguard pay nothing. Moving a taxable account and a Roth IRA costs $200.
Vanguard Margin Rates
Rates add a spread to a 9.75% base rate.
A balance under $20,000 pays 12.25%, about double the 6.00% for clients with $5 million at Vanguard.
Costs That Do Not Show On The Fee Page
- Every stock and ETF sale carries a securities transaction fee, a pass-through charge with no amount on the schedule.
- Vanguard may deduct 20% of class-action settlement money it recovers for a client.
- Non-Vanguard funds sold within 60 days carry a $50 early redemption fee.
- Leveraged, inverse, exchange-traded note (ETN) and memecoin ETF purchases are blocked outright in place of a surcharge.
Uninvested Cash: What It Earns And Who Holds It
Vanguard offers a money market settlement fund and two bank-sweep products. They have different yields and protections, and Cash Plus is a separate account.
Using the September research snapshot, $10,000 held for a year would earn about $373 at VMFXX's 3.73% annualized yield or $175 at Cash Deposit's 1.75% APY. Vanguard displayed 3.50% APY for Cash Plus when checked on October 8, 2026, equivalent to about $350 over a year. These illustrations assume unchanged rates and balances, before taxes. Rates can change, and a money market fund's seven-day yield differs from a bank sweep APY.
Vanguard Settlement Fund (VMFXX)
Vanguard's settlement fund, the account's default cash position, is Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund (VMFXX), whose annualized seven-day yield was 3.73% on September 22, 2026. It is a money market fund held under SIPC, not a bank deposit. SIPC replaces missing shares if the broker collapses. It does not cover a fall in the fund's price.
IRA cash goes to the same fund.
Vanguard Cash Plus And Cash Deposit: The Bank Sweep Options
Vanguard Cash Plus is a separate brokerage account that sweeps cash into banks, and it is the nearest thing Vanguard has to a high-yield savings account. It has no minimum balance, and e-delivery waives the account service fee.
Vanguard Cash Deposit is the opt-in bank sweep inside a regular brokerage account. Both use Program Banks, with combined eligible deposits covered up to $1.25 million per individual or $2.5 million per joint registration, subject to FDIC limits and deposits held elsewhere at the same banks. Vanguard's Form CRS, the relationship summary every broker must give clients, lists the bank sweep program as a source of company revenue.
Account Types And Retirement
Vanguard covers the standard retirement and family accounts but has dropped the plans self-employed investors use most.
Ascensus bought Vanguard's Solo 401(k) and SIMPLE IRA plans in 2024. Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Company is the IRA custodian, and an IRA here holds no spot crypto. Advice products such as Personal Advisor Services belong to a separate company, Vanguard Advisers, Inc.
Order Execution And Payment For Order Flow
Vanguard's Rule 606 reports, the quarterly filings that show where a broker sends orders and what it is paid, record zero payment for order flow on every line in every month of Q1 and Q2 2026. Vanguard's brokerage agreement reserves the right to accept payment for options orders later.
Wolverine Execution Services handled between 46.13% and 47.25% of Vanguard's options flow in each month from January to June 2026.
For the 12 months to December 31, 2025, Vanguard reports a 5.68% effective-over-quoted spread on S&P 500 market orders, a measure of how much of the quoted bid-ask spread an order paid. It also reports midpoint pricing, halfway between the bid and ask, on over 99% of its own ETF trades. Those figures are the company's own. The linked Rule 605 folder, meant for monthly execution reports, is empty, and the amended rule does not yet require a broker-level report.
Vanguard offers four basic order types: market, limit, stop and stop-limit. It offers no trailing stops. Orders last a day or good-till-canceled for up to 60 calendar days, and pre-market and after-hours trading is available. Exercising an option takes a phone call to an investment professional.
Is Vanguard Safe? SIPC, Entities And Regulatory Record
SIPC protects securities and cash at a failed member broker, up to $500,000 including $250,000 for cash, and does nothing if prices fall. Vanguard holds no crypto, so no investor's assets are held by a separate crypto company.
| Role | Entity | Protection |
|---|---|---|
| Self-clearing broker-dealer | Vanguard Marketing Corporation (Vanguard Brokerage Services) | SIPC if the broker fails, plus unnamed excess insurer |
| IRA custodian | Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Company | Not disclosed separately |
| Foreign-securities clearing | JPMorgan | Not disclosed |
| Bank sweep | Unnamed Program Banks | FDIC to $1.25M individual, $2.5M joint |
| Parent and fund sponsor | The Vanguard Group, Inc. | Funds held outside a brokerage account, no SIPC broker-failure cover |
| Advice | Vanguard Advisers, Inc. | Advisory company, not the broker |
Vanguard buys extra coverage above SIPC from an insurer it does not identify, and publishes no limits. Neither layer covers market losses. Vanguard Marketing Corporation clears its own trades. Its audited statement for December 31, 2025 shows net capital, the cushion regulators require a broker to hold, at $417.0 million above the minimum, and $522.5 million in cash kept separate for customers under Rule 15c3-3, the SEC rule that walls client assets off.
The Target Retirement Fund matter began with a fund decision by The Vanguard Group, but a Wisconsin consent order of March 10, 2025 listed the broker as a named party with its own supervision finding. That one matter accounts for 47 of the broker's 51 BrokerCheck events because each state filed separately. The private parent files no 10-Q, the quarterly report that would list open investigations.
For an investor, the record is one large settled case against the broker and its parent, the $800,000 fine over statements and the $50,000 fine over an options exercise. None is pending.
Platform, Apps And Research Tools
Vanguard runs on a website and one mobile app. Its tools include five stock screeners with more than 40 criteria, a mutual fund and ETF screener and a historical ex-dividend date tool.
Vanguard App Ratings And Login Problems
The iOS app rates 4.65 from 177,466 ratings and Google Play shows 2.81 from 11,416, but recent reviews are harsher on both stores. On Google Play, 72% of the newest 600 reviews give one or two stars. On iOS the share is 48% of the newest 500, down from 71% to 72% in January to March 2026, after an update dropped older iOS versions. Login failures lead the complaints, with 223 negative reviews citing browser-redirect loops and rejected passkeys. On August 5, 2024, during a market sell-off, Downdetector logged about 2,900 Vanguard access reports, and service returned the same day.
Opening, Funding And Withdrawals
A Vanguard brokerage account has no minimum, though Vanguard mutual funds carry their own minimums of $1,000 to $100,000. Investors fund it by Electronic Bank Transfer (ACH), wire or check.
Money added by bank transfer or check is held for 7 calendar days before it can pay for brokerage trades, and Vanguard does not say whether the same hold delays a withdrawal. ACH withdrawals are free, a wire costs $10, and leaving costs $100 per account below $5 million at Vanguard.
Support And Complaints
Vanguard answers the phone Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time, at 877-662-7447, and logged-in investors can send secure messages. There is no live chat and no branch network. Written complaints go to Vanguard Brokerage Services at P.O. Box 982901, El Paso, TX 79998-2901, and FINRA's BrokerCheck hotline is 800-289-9999.
Phone wait times dominate third-party complaints, with 20 of 33 US Trustpilot reviews from May to September 2026 describing long waits or no way to escalate. Trustpilot scores Vanguard 1.3 from 378 reviews overall, and press coverage of wait times runs back to 2021, including a Philadelphia Inquirer report of a three-hour wait.
Complaints about money movement describe bank verification taking about 10 days in app and Trustpilot reviews, and 22 negative iOS reviews from June 2025 to September 2026 report account-opening loops.
Vanguard Alternatives
Each of these adds crypto or trading tools that Vanguard lacks.
Fidelity comes closest on cash and adds direct crypto. Schwab, E*TRADE and Robinhood pay less on cash than Vanguard's money market fund.

Final Verdict
Vanguard suits long-term fund investors who leave cash idle, since the default money market fund pays more than Vanguard's own FDIC sweep. Active traders face a basic order menu, a 7-day deposit hold and weekday phone support, and crypto means third-party ETFs only.
