Hong Kong bank pilot opens 24/7 cash settlement for tokenized fund deals

Participating institutions can settle tokenized deposit transactions in central bank money beyond conventional hours, supporting treasury and fund activity.

Quick Take

  1. EnsembleTX now supports 24/7 interbank settlement of tokenized deposit transactions in tokenized central bank money.
  2. The controlled pilot involves 12 banks and 20 industry pioneers, with access dependent on participating institutions.
  3. Trials involving regulated stablecoins remain forthcoming, separate from the upgraded settlement capability already available within the EnsembleTX pilot.

Hong Kong's tokenization pilot now lets participating banks settle tokenized deposit transactions around the clock in central bank money, extending the cash settlement behind corporate treasury and tokenized-fund activity beyond conventional operating hours.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced the upgrade on Nov. 2. EnsembleTX, the pilot phase of Project Ensemble, now has 12 participating banks and 20 industry pioneers.

The customer deposits and the settlement money have different roles. Participating firms use tokenized deposits supplied by commercial banks; tokenized central bank money settles the transactions between banks. The upgrade extends the hours available for that interbank cash settlement.

A longer settlement window

Participating industry pioneers have already used bank-provided tokenized deposits for corporate treasury management and tokenized money market fund transactions. HKMA names Ant International, BlackRock and China Asset Management (Hong Kong) among the firms involved.

Banks providing tokenized deposits for the cited activity include Bank of China (Hong Kong), China Construction Bank (Asia), ICBC (Asia), Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) and HSBC. These are examples given by HKMA, rather than the full roster of 12 participating banks.

For a corporate treasury using the pilot, the practical change is that its participating bank can settle the relevant transactions outside conventional operating hours. Tokenized-fund users gain extended cash-settlement availability where their banks and platforms support the activity.

Securities and Futures Commission Chief Executive Julia Leung said the capability supports round-the-clock corporate treasury transactions and secondary trading of tokenized funds on licensed platforms. Availability for an individual fund still depends on the bank and platform arrangements; continuous interbank settlement does not establish continuous trading for every fund.

EnsembleTX opens a 24/7 settlement window

Participating firms use bank-provided tokenized deposits. Tokenized central bank money now settles those transactions between banks around the clock.

Compare the settlement capability

EnsembleTX now supports 24/7 interbank settlement in tokenized central bank money for participating institutions.

The change extends interbank settlement hours within a controlled pilot; bank deposits and central bank settlement money keep different roles.

EnsembleTX launched in November 2025 as a controlled environment for real-value transactions involving tokenized deposits and digital assets. It initially used the Hong Kong dollar Real Time Gross Settlement system. Round-the-clock settlement in tokenized central bank money was envisaged as a later enhancement. November's change extends the settlement infrastructure behind that existing real-value activity.

The newly enabled capability remains within that participating-institution pilot.

HKMA also outlined separate trial work in its FinTech Week update. It reported completed trial trades involving recognized dealers conducting secondary-market transactions in tokenized Exchange Fund Bills, then said it would soon expand trials to include regulated stablecoins.

The planned stablecoin trials remain a separate next step.
