Paxful About
Paxful was a peer-to-peer (P2P) cryptocurrency marketplace best known for enabling users to buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC) directly with one another using a wide range of payment methods. The platform’s model emphasized accessibility in regions with limited banking infrastructure by supporting alternative rails such as local bank transfers, cash-based options, and gift cards, alongside more conventional payment methods where available.
Overview
Paxful operated as a P2P marketplace rather than a traditional order book exchange. Users posted buy and sell offers, negotiated terms, and completed trades through an escrow flow designed to reduce counterparty risk. Paxful’s listings historically included BTC as the primary asset, with support for additional assets in some periods, including Ethereum (ETH) and stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, depending on product availability and jurisdiction.
History and Background
Paxful was founded in 2015 and grew into one of the most widely recognized P2P crypto marketplaces, particularly in emerging markets where flexible payment options were a core differentiator. In April 2023, Paxful suspended its marketplace amid operational and legal uncertainty, a move covered in CryptoSlate reporting. The platform later moved toward restoring market functionality, as described in subsequent CryptoSlate coverage, after a short hiatus.
In October 2025, Paxful announced a wind-down of operations, citing cumulative compliance and remediation costs and historic conduct tied to former leadership. By early 2026, Paxful’s public updates stated it was no longer conducting business and was focused on returning remaining user funds through the wind-down process.
