Google’s Bard is a conversational artificial intelligence chatbot based on the LaMDA family of big language models. It was created in direct response to the rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and it was introduced in limited quantities in March 2023 to lukewarm reception.
Google opened up early access for Bard on March 21, 2023 in a limited capacity, allowing users in the U.S. and UK to join a waitlist.
Unlike Microsoft’s strategy with Bing, Bard was released as a standalone online application with a text box and a statement that the chatbot “may display inaccurate or offensive information that does not represent Google’s views.” Each question is then given three responses, with users encouraged to provide input on the usefulness of each answer. Google vice presidents Sissie Hsiao and Eli Collins defined Bard as a supplement to Google Search and indicated that the business had not resolved how to make the service viable.
